meet the sixpack

 hi again. :D

i've had several requests to carry on the story but, before i continue i thought u guys might want to meet the "sixpack".

Nell is the oldest, a 4 yr old mare, named after the character Jodie Foster played in the movie of the same name. Nell - the unsocialized wild child.

ok, not so wild any more. :D

Archie is the oldest colt at 3 yrs. as we were trying to pick from the snapshots which horses we would save, i thought he was a red roan. when talking to my husband i kept referring to him as the "red-headed colt." I wanted to shorten it and name him after a famous red-head, and archie it was.

of course when he arrived we discovered he was a bay roan instead  but by then the name had stuck.

Archie is our snorty guy, u know the long low "ohhhh myyyy goshhhh" kind of snorts. I think he must have loose nostrils or something ;) as he snorts more then any other horse i've ever met.

but, as snorty as he is, he can be a laid back kinda guy! :XD:

this is the first time to sit astride :D

but poor arch, he got tired out from all the exertion and.....

sound asleep, eye twitching, lip wiggling dreams and all!

Islands is the younger colt at 2 yrs. Again in talking about him to my husband who didn't know what overo meant, i kept telling him the red and white paint ,with the pattern like a coastline, like islands.

And Islands he became. :D

and with eyes like this...

can u imagine any other short form for him then "Eyes"

when i originally picked islands out, he was to be the youngster i was going to bring along to be my next levels horse as my guy is now 19.

But,..... my daughter fell in love with him, and the feeling seems go be mutual :XD: so he became hers to play with. :D

next come Nutmeg, named for her colour, and as the smallest of the crew, "Meg" just seemed to fit.

Meg spent a LOT of time in the early days peering off into the distance, looking away....

she also liked to put her feet on anything, climb on anything...

today, she's much more relaxed. :D

this was last week, and the first time sitting on her.

The sixpack arrived here on November 11th, Remembrance Day here in Canada. I repeatedly told my husband "when times are hard you need to remind me why we did this, not to get more horses, but to save their lives." So, with most of the names i tried for something to remind me.

Meet November.

Nova has been the most challenging of them all. She is soooo sensitive, with strong opinions, and extremely easily offended. The last one to touch, to stroke, having to do so much approach and retreat to extend touch to any part of her body. Flighty, kicky, and had a thing about faces. When we got to the point of her approaching, she would start to sniff lower or mid body, slowly getting higher. When she would get to my face she would lightning fast try to bite it, and i mean mouth wide open try to bite. So, we saw a lot of looks like this...

So, while Nova remains the most challenging one of them all, she has come a LONG way. :D

she still expresses strong opinions, in this case about the saddle pad.

and last but not least.... (u guys remember the arrival date right?)

Eleven. Not just because they arrived on the 11th, but also she really was saved in the 11th hour. In all my agonizing deliberations about who to buy, to save, she was never even on my short list. Then, at the last minute we picked her.

Shy, retiring, introverted, Eleven

But, sweet, just the sweetest mare you could wish for!

November and Eleven are the 2 mommies (the 3 yr old mommies :( ).

While i was really concerned how Nova would do as a mother, she has been so much better then what i was afraid of. But, not what you would call a soft, affectionate mommy. For instance, she never licked her baby when she was born, not once.

Eleven on the other hand, well, not only has she been a fantastic calm loving mommy to her baby, but to Nova's baby as well. :XD:

So, a common view around here this summer is Eleven and her twins.

ok, that's the sixpack. :D

i'll be back as soon as i can to formally introduce u to the "bonus pack" :D
